Where to start
Small wins first. Most people never need step three.
Tongue scraper and a stain toothpaste. Starts tonight.
Peroxide-free strips or a colour corrector for the front teeth.
A water flosser or sonic brush, used daily.
Hard tartar and deep stains. One cleaning, then back to step 3.
Why teeth stain
Short version, no lecture.
Tannins stick to the thin protein film on enamel. Surface stains: the kind home products handle well.
Tar and nicotine stain fast and sink deeper. Expect slower, partial results at home.
That's tartar: hardened plaque. You can stop new buildup at home. Removing the hard stuff is a dentist job.
Abrasive or acidic. They can wear enamel, which makes teeth look more yellow over time.
Leave these to your dentist
- Hard tartar you can see or feel — a cleaning takes 30 minutes
- Gums that bleed for more than two weeks
- Bad breath that won't go away with a scraper and flossing
- Grey or very deep yellow teeth — often not a surface stain
